Toast Ale - Turning Food Waste into Beer
44% of all bread produced in the UK is thrown away. Social business veterans Tristram and Rob have created a new beer brand to tackle the problem.
In the UK, bread is top of the list of our most wasted household food items. We waste almost 900,000 tonnes of bread every year – around every day. In terms of calories, that’s enough to lift over 26 million people out of hunger.
Toast Ale take this surplus fresh bread and combine it with malted barley, oat husks, hops, yeast and water. Bread is packed with carbohydrates, which are broken down to sugar, then yeast converts the sugar to alcohol. They have even published the recipe on their blog.
